Alpine Federation, 1948

In 1942, a new leader gets elected in Switzerland. This man, Hugo Fournier, was born in Geneva in 1903. Growing up, he had seen the Nazis do terrible things, and was publicly against the neutrality of his nation. Through advertising and propaganda, he was elected as the Chancellor of Switzerland. As he made reforms to the Government, allowing the leader and government more power in decisions. Effectively, he brought the nation into the Second World War.

When Switzerland joined the allies, they were in a bad position. The Nazis occupied the North-Western portion of the country without a fight. As the war went on, the military got better, and they got more support from the other Allies. By 1944, they had successfully taken portions of Austria, Germany, and Italy. 

In 1946, as peace treaties were being signed, Switzerland became a new nation- the Alpine Federation. Through political power and a lot of gold, Liechtenstein joined the nation. This nation is composed of five cantons, Gran Paradiso, Liechtenstein, Trento, Innsbruck, and Salzburg.
